William Herschel
(1738 - 1788)
William Herschel was born in 1738 in Hanover, Germany. He spent his childhood at home with his family, but in 1772 he moved to Bath, England where he was soon accompanied by his sister, Caroline Herschel. William became one of the greatest telescope makers of his time; many of his telescopes are still used today. His greatest achievment, though, was discovering the planet Uranus in 1781. William later married in 1788 and welcomed his only son, John Herschel, in 1792. On August 25, 1822 at the age of 84.
