House of Wisdom
The House of Wisdom was a key part from the 9th to 13th century. It was used as a library and translation institute. The name came from the Persian Sassanian language and translates to library. Many of the best muslim scholars went there to research and learn. Al-Ma'mun reigned from 813-833 when al-Khwarizmi was there. When he reigned, Observatories went up. Baghdad had over a million people which was huge in that time period and was known as one of the riches cities of its time. It was a major learning center in the Islamic Golden Age. Sadly, it was destroyed in 1258 along with many other libraries in Baghdad during the Mongol invasion of Baghdad. It was said that the river was black from all the ink of the books thrown in. While it lasted, it was one of the best paces to go to learn and discover. Al-Khwarizmi accomplished most of his work there.
