GOTTFRIED LEIBNIZ

1647-1716

Leibniz was a philosopher and mathematician that worked in the fields of geology, theology, mathematics, mechanics, history, jurisprudence and linguistics . His father died when he was 7 and his mother and his mother died when he was 17. He attended  the Nicolai school, the university of Leipzig, and the university of Altdorf.  Augustus Ferdinand Mobius also attended Leipzig but much later on. Throughout his life he worked in many places but most his advances came from when he worked in Nuermburg, Paris and Hanover.

Gottfried grew up in Germany, during his time the 30 year war greatly affected Germany and himself. Also during this time many new arts were made and they also might of affected him.

Gottfried was a very smart man, he invented many ideas that we still use today, such as the binary system of arithmetic; his system is still commonly used today. Leibniz perfected the calculating machine that was previously made by Blaise Pascal. Many question if Leibniz or Isaac Newton invented calculus notation, because they each claim to have invented it. Leibniz first published a account on it and after this, him and Newtown wrote letters and got into a fight about who really invented it. Leibniz published many accounts about his works, including books such as "Essay d’une nouvelle science des nombres" about his system of arithmetic and "Nova methodus pro maximis et minimis, itemaue tangentious:" about his familiar d notations.

Leibniz was a religious man, and later on in life he developed a theory on monads. Monads are like a invisible force that controls the universe, and god is the ultimate monad in control of all others.

Leibniz met with Christian Goldbach in Europe and exchanged many letters.

Leibniz and Isaac Newton had a disagreement about who discovered calculus.

Emilie Du Chatelet studied Leibniz's work and wrote a book on his system called "Institutions de physique".
